Charles Perrault (1628–1703) was a French author whose fairy tales form the foundation of the Western fairy tale tradition. His 1697 collection Histoires ou Contes du Temps Passé, also known as Tales of Mother Goose, gave the world Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, Puss in Boots, and Bluebeard. Perrault was the first to write these stories down in their modern form, and his versions remain the definitive tellings nearly 350 years later.
