The architect shivered under the harsh chill of winter and he brought his sweater closer to his body; it was the worst freeze that he could remember. And today was going to be an even worse day no less, he had to tell them, he had to tell them to keep going. The company was facing a financial crisis and they could not afford to let this client down too, their priority was work before pleasure or comfort, and even though this seemed cruel, he knew that it was the only way. He had called all the workers for a meeting at the construction-site, out in the open and as he went inside the half-completed building, he saw many of them shivering so violently that he started to get afraid and wanted to run back home and hide his face, he could already foresee the aftermath of his speech… He called them all around him and broke the news, they were supposed to keep on working, no holidays for the winter and if anyone refused to comply, then they will be fired immediately; they were poor men and all they knew was manual labor and nowadays the work was getting fewer and for them, it was a question of survival, they could not refuse…

Personally, the architect had seen them as his brothers and he didn’t want to be doing this, but his own job was at stake here, he had to if he was going to support his sister’s education, their grandma and his own life…And as he looked into the weary and depressed eyes of his employees, he suddenly recalled the poem Fire and Ice by Robert Frost; when he had first read it, he thought that fire might be the dominant one, it had always burned with such intensity and had always fascinated him, but now he realized that he was terribly mistaken, nothing could be worse than the cold. The distance between life and death was clearly visible now. Now they all had to function through it all. It had made their acquaintance, but he knew that together they could go on…
