Foster & Cummings
Mary H. Foster and Mabel H. Cummings are the authors of Asgard Stories: Tales from Norse Mythology. The stories for children feature the familiar Norse figures including Odin, Thor, and Loki. The authors created the mythology because they felt the myths needed to adapt for young readers, as most books on Norse myths were detail-heavy and hard for children to read. They also believed that teaching of mythology should begin with the Norse myths, followed by the Greek myths for comparison. According to Foster and Cummings, they believed the moral tone of the Norse myth and folk tales were higher than those of the Greeks. Their main interest was to make the stories interesting, easy to read, and a catalyst for sparking children’s imaginations.
