Mary Frere
Born in 1845 in Gloucestershire, Mary Frere was the English author of Old Deccan Days, a collection of Indian fairy tales and folk tales. Her work was the first English-language volume of Indian tales. She would collect the tales while traveling with her father, the Governor of Bombay. Her work informed Joseph Jacobs’ own 1892 collection of folklore from India entitled Indian Fairy Tales. Frere died in 1911.
