Padraic Colum
Padraic Colum was a prolific Irish author and playwright who wrote several collections of folktale stories for children. Although born in Ireland in 1881, he moved to America in 1914. Soon he began publishing children’s books of folklore, including 1920’s Children of Odin: Nordic Gods and Heroes, which retold the Eddas and the Volsung Saga.
Calum undertook the task of adapting folklore for young readers. Books of folklore from Greece, Celtic Britain, and Hawaii followed, and he received several retrospective Newberry Honor citations. He passed away in 1972 at the age of 90.
