We received multiple entries for our first writing competition, Best New Fairy Tale here at Fairytalez.com. The entries represented a variety of categories and included retellings, fables, poetry, horror, humor and many other genres. To make our selection, the editors of Fairytalez.com read all of the submitted stories, then narrowed the list down to the stories they’d like to read again or the ones that felt most like a fairy tale. From there we focus-tested the stories on family members, as well as the editors’ children. After much deliberation, we’ve chosen our winner of the $300 Amazon gift card!
Winner of the Best New Fairy Tale
Karina Kamelia by Victoria Rivas
This fable playfully uses language to tell a good moral about the delights of life. Like Dr. Seuss and other masters of rhyme, Karina Kamelia has great sounds throughout the piece. The use of words like “bee-busy” and “flounceish” add to its charm. It was a fairy tale that the website editors and owners couldn’t get out of their head – and it was kid-approved as well!
